58% of Healthcare Organizations Have Nurse Informaticists on Staff

More than half of healthcare providers say that they have nurse informaticists on their clinical informatics staff, according to "Needles in a Haystack: Seeking Knowledge with Clinical Informatics," a report by PwC's Health Research Institute.

For the report, researchers conducted 30 in-depth interviews with IT, clinical and strategy professionals involved with informatics within their healthcare organizations. They also conducted online surveys, in 2011, of more than 400 providers, 90 health insurers and 100 pharmaceutical and life sciences executives on their approaches and strategies for analyzing clinical data.

When asked to describe the clinical informatics staffing at their organizations, providers reported the following, according to the report:

•    Nurse informaticists —58 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Other clinical informaticists — 50 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Dedicated data analysts — 46 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Chief medical informatics officer — 45 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    MDs via informal role — 45 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Physician informaticists — 28 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Biostatisticians — 14 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Chief nursing informatics officer —13 percent say that they are a part of their staff
•    Outsourced staff — 8 percent say that they are a part of their staff
