Carrollton, Ala.-based Pickens County Medical Center will close its doors this week, according to a March 2 news release.
The west Alabama medical center's leaders said the closure "can no longer be avoided" as the 56-bed facility's financial condition has become unsustainable.
A news release announcing the closure specifically cited reduced federal funding, lower reimbursement from commercial payers and declining patient visits.
Patients will be discharged or relocated by March 6.
"Although closure must be accomplished quickly, we are committed to an orderly and transparent process," the medical center said. "We regret that this action is necessary and thank you for your support through the years."
