Maintaining an up-to-date chargemaster should be a top priority for hospitals, advised Kerry Martin, president and CEO of VitalWare, a revenue cycle solutions provider.
“An out-of-date chargemaster can mean major compliance issues for hospitals, but developing a steering committee with representation from the relevant departments to keep track of changes in CMS requirements and pricing can keep everything above board,” said Mr. Martin.
“A designated steering committee could benefit from biannual meetings to review charges or meet when new regulations are rolled out,” he said.
Overall, he said, a steering committee allows hospitals to prioritize their chargemasters without disrupting operations.
