GetInsured, a platform that allows users to shop for health plans, helped erase more than $1.8 million in medical debt for patients in Pennsylvania.
The donation came after a 400-person GetInsured survey found more than half of Pennsylvania respondents declined treatment because they feared a large bill would follow. This fear was present even though 90 percent of respondents had health insurance.
GetInsured conducted similar surveys in Nevada and Minnesota, which also uncovered growing fear of medical debt among patients in those states.
To eliminate debt, GetInsured worked with RIP Medical Debt to purchase the debt for pennies on the dollar and forgive it. GetInsured had made donations in three other states to eliminate medical debt.
