Montana's St. Peter's Hospital Discusses Billing Issues

St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, Mont., hosted a public forum about medical billing issues to inform patients about the hospital's billing practices and elicit feedback, according to an Independent Record report.

For example, in response to patient feedback, the hospital began sending only one statement after electronically billing the insurance company and an additional statement only for billing a patient's self-pay obligations instead of sending a statement each month.

Approximately 10 out of 40 people who attended the billing forum spoke about billing issues they have experienced, including managing multiple bills from different providers, multiple account numbers for the same patient and late or inaccurate billing.

Sheri Renney, director of patient billing services at the hospital, encouraged patients to review initial hospital bills for accuracy and compare the hospital's statement with their insurers' explanations of benefits.

The hospital has more than 14,000 patient registrations each month; recently the hospital had 38,509 active accounts in a month, producing more than 24,000 statements.
