Less than 10 percent of healthcare providers are more than halfway ready in terms of being fully prepared for ICD-10, according to a KLAS report.
The report found that most organizations are still in the strategy and planning phases of their implementation, and a patient accounting director in the report said "meaningful use is a cakewalk compared to ICD-10."
Other results from the study include the following:
• Some large health systems plan to spend tens of millions of dollars, while some mid-size hospitals expect their implementation to cost several million.
• The most common internal steps providers said they have taken include developing a steering committee, creating a comprehensive ICD-10 readiness strategy and developing training plans for coders, physicians, nurses and other staff.
• Roughly two-thirds of healthcare providers said they are or plan to engage with third-party firms to help with the preparation steps.
