According to a survey from Fidelity Benefits Consulting, couples retiring at age 65 are expected to incur $220,000 in out-of-pocket healthcare costs on average to cover their medical expenses throughout retirement.
The out-of-pocket healthcare costs are holding steady, as the estimate was the same for 2013. The costs have declined since 2010, when it was estimated retirees would spend $250,000 in out-of-pocket healthcare costs.
Although the out-of-pocket costs have been declining, the growth in Medicare enrollees over the next few years is expected to further strain Medicare resources, which could cause the trend to change, according to a news release.
