Employer Healthcare Costs to Exceed $10,000 per Employee in 2012

Employers' healthcare costs are expected to exceed $10,000 per employee for the first time in 2012, according to a study from human resources consultant Aon Hewitt.

Premiums are expected to rise 7 percent next year, slightly lower than the 7.5 percent increase between 2010 and 2011.

Employers predict they will spend $10,475 per employee in 2012, $1,364 more than they did two years ago. Health maintenance organization plans are expected to jump 7.8 percent to an average of $11,151 next year, while preferred provider organizations and point-of-service plans are expected to increase 6.6 percent to $10,038 and $11,059, respectively.

According to Aon Hewitt, three main factors are driving up healthcare costs: quantity and cost of large claims, older work forces and poorer health. The large claims could be avoided if employees took preventive measures, according to the report.
