From seeking Chapter 11 protection on May 6 to sharing plans to close four of its hospitals across Massachusetts and Ohio that would result in a combined 2,187 layoffs, Dallas-based Steward Health Care has experienced a great deal of turbulence over the last year.
As the for-profit health system continues to push back bid deadlines and sale hearings for many of its hospitals, the status of each facility remains in question, leaving community members, healthcare workers and state and local lawmakers concerned.
Below, Becker's has provided a list of Steward's 31 hospitals by state, per the health system's website, and the most recent information regarding each facility.

Arizona
Attorney General Kris Mayes launched an investigation into Steward's bankruptcy on May 10.
1. Florence Hospital: Scottsdale, Ariz.-based HonorHealth was named interim manager for this hospital under an interim settlement agreement between Steward and its landlord Medical Properties Trust during a Sept. 11 Steward bankruptcy court hearing and received approval to purchase the hospital during an Oct. 3 hearing.
2. Mountain Vista Medical Center (Mesa): HonorHealth was named as the interim manager for this hospital under the interim agreement between Steward and Medical Properties Trust and received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital during an Oct. 3 hearing.
3. St. Luke's Behavioral Health (Phoenix): The 127-bed facility was ordered to cease operations by state officials Aug. 14 after temperatures inside the hospital reached 99 degrees. Employees at the hospital were furloughed Aug. 26 due to the suspended operations and Steward filed an Oct. 1 WARN notice to lay off 255 employees. Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based College Health Enterprises, a healthcare management company, received bankruptcy court approval to become interim manager of the hospital during an Oct. 22 hearing.
4. Tempe St. Luke's Hospital: HonorHealth was named as the interim manager for this hospital under the interim agreement between Steward and Medical Properties Trust and received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital during an Oct. 3 hearing.
Arkansas
1. Wadley Regional Medical Center at Hope: Hope-based Pafford Health Systems received approval Sept. 12 to purchase the hospital for $200,000.
Florida
1. Coral Gables Hospital: Healthcare Systems of America, an affiliate of Glendale, Calif.-based American Healthcare Systems received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
2. Florida Medical Center (Lauderdale Lakes): Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
3. Hialeah Hospital: Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
4. Melbourne Regional Medical Center: In March, it was reported that a lawsuit was filed against the hospital, and Rockledge Regional Medical Center, by a landscaping company for more than $59,000 in unpaid bills. Orlando Health received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital and two other Steward Florida facilities for $439.42 million on Sept. 10.
5. North Shore Medical Center (Miami): The hospital closed its neonatal intensive care unit and behavioral health units Feb. 9 and its obstetrics unit March 10. The service cuts resulted in 152 employee layoffs. In early July it was revealed that North Shore was ordered by the FDA to pause its mammogram services after failing to meet clinical image quality standards by the American College of Radiology. Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
6. Palmetto General Hospital (Hialeah): Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
7. Rockledge Regional Medical Center: Another lawsuit was filed against Rockledge Regional by a pest control company due to a bat infestation in the facility. The lawsuit claimed that the bat removal took almost two months and cost $936,320. The company demanded Steward pay more than $1.6 million for interest, damages, attorney fees and court costs. Orlando Health received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital and two other Steward Florida facilities for $439.42 million on Sept. 10.
8. Sebastian River Medical Center: Orlando Health received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital and two other Steward Florida facilities for $439.42 million on Sept. 10.
Louisiana
1. Glenwood Regional Medical Center (West Monroe): The hospital closed its inpatient rehabilitation unit March 20. In late June, the hospital shared that it had laid off 23 employees, including some in leadership positions, as a "necessary step to adjust to the business conditions that have changed." Healthcare Systems of America Glenwood was named as the interim manager for this hospital under the interim agreement between Steward and Medical Properties Trust.
Massachusetts
1. Carney Hospital (Dorchester): The hospital closed Aug. 31 and laid off 753 employees.
2. Good Samaritan Medical Center (Brockton): Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey shared that deals "in principle" had been reached in mid-August to keep multiple Steward hospitals running. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Chris Lopez approved Boston Medical Center to take over Good Samaritan as part of a $140 million deal during a Sept. 4 hearing.
3. Holy Family Hospital-Haverhill: Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital received approval Sept. 4 to purchase the hospital as part of a $28 million deal and officially took over operations on Oct. 1.
4. Holy Family Hospital-Methuen: Lawrence General Hospital received approval Sept. 4 to also purchase this hospital as part of a $28 million deal and officially took over operations on Oct. 1.
5. Morton Hospital (Taunton): Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan received approval Sept. 4 to purchase Morton Hospital as part of a $175 million deal and officially took over operations on Oct. 1.
6. Nashoba Valley Medical Center (Ayer): The hospital closed Aug. 31 and laid off 490 employees.
7. Norwood (Mass.) Hospital: Steward filed an Oct. 7 notice of closure for the already nonoperational hospital and four satellite facilities, which include a facility specializing in performance therapy, an infusion clinic, a pharmacy and a facility offering radiology services.
8. St. Anne's Hospital (Fall River): Lifespan also received approval Sept. 4 to purchase St. Anne's as part of a $175 million definitive agreement and officially took over operations on Oct. 1.
9. St. Elizabeth's Medical Center (Brighton): Boston Medical Center received approval Sept. 4 to acquire St. Elizabeth's as part of a $140 million deal. Ms. Healey seized control of the hospital through eminent domain Sept. 27 to transfer operations to Boston Medical Center, who officially took over operations on Oct. 1.
Ohio
1. Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital (Warren): The hospital was originally set to close on or around Sept. 20 and lay off 170 employees. Flint, Mich.-based Insight Health Systems received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital Oct. 16 and has since shared plans to lay off an undisclosed amount of employees.
2. Trumbull Regional Medical Center (Warren): The hospital was initially expected to close on or around Sept. 20 and result in 765 layoffs. Insight Health Systems received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital Oct. 16 and has since shared plans to lay off an undisclosed amount of employees.
Pennsylvania
1. Sharon Regional Medical Center: Pennsylvania has agreed to pay Steward $4.5 million over three months to keep the hospital from closing its doors. The funding will be used for hospital operating purposes only.
Texas
1. Medical Center SE Texas-Port Arthur: Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
2. Odessa Regional Medical Center: Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital Oct. 11.
3. Scenic Mountain Medical Center (Big Spring): Quorum Health received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital Oct. 11.
4. St. Joseph Medical Center (Houston): Healthcare Systems of America received bankruptcy court approval to purchase this hospital during an Oct. 25 court hearing.
5. Wadley Regional Medical Center (Texarkana): Christus Health Ark-La-Tex, part of Irving, Texas-based Christus Health, entered into a binding asset purchase agreement for the hospital on Sept. 3 and received bankruptcy court approval to purchase the hospital on Sept. 24.
Editor's note: During a Sept. 17 final hearing, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez gave final approval to make the interim management of 15 Steward hospitals permanent.
