The American Medical Association adopted new guidelines at its semi-annual policy-making meeting that support an open marketplace model for health insurance exchanges, according to an AMA news release.
AMA members said involvement of state medical associations in the legislative and regulatory process associated with the exchanges is necessary to increase the competition of insurers and provide the most health plan options for patients.
AMA Board Member Barbara McAneny, MD, also added that "physicians and patients should be involved in setting up and governing these bodies to ensure they best meet the healthcare needs of residents in each state," according to the release.
