9 Major For-Profit Hospital Operators Release Quarterly Earnings

Nine of the largest for-profit hospital operators reported quarterly earnings over the past month. Seven of the nine companies recorded second quarter earnings for fiscal year 2012. Vanguard Health Systems posted fourth quarter and year-end results for FY 2012, and IASIS Healthcare reported third quarter results for FY 2012. Here are the quarterly financials of all nine hospital companies, starting with the most recent.

1. Net income at Vanguard Health Systems soared in its recent earnings report, as the Nashville, Tenn.-based operator posted a profit of $19.3 million in the fourth quarter of its 2012 fiscal year and a profit of $57.3 million for the entire FY 2012.

2. Although adjusted admissions, surgeries and emergency department visits increased in the second quarter of 2012 for Tenet Healthcare, the Dallas-based for-profit hospital operator posted a $6 million loss, reflecting impairment and restructuring charges.

3. Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare recorded $10.8 million in profit in the third quarter of its 2012 fiscal year, an improvement over a $463,000 loss in the third quarter of 2011, but the for-profit hospital operator's net revenue took a slight hit downward.

4. Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the country, reported net income of $391 million in the second quarter of 2012 — a 70.7 percent upsurge from last year's second quarter profit of $229 million.

5. Capella Healthcare, based in Franklin, Tenn., reported a loss of $1.3 million in the second quarter, a major drop-off from the second quarter of 2011 when the for-profit hospital operator recorded $3.3 million in profit.

6. For the second quarter ended June 30, 2012, Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals reported almost identical net income figures, as both quarters hovered around $40.3 million.

7. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported a positive second quarter, as net income rose 3.8 percent year-over-year from $103.6 million in 2011 to $107.6 million this year.

8. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems' profit in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 surged 136 percent — from $35.4 million last year to $83.4 million this year — but an impairment loss heavily influenced last year's net income.

9. Net income at Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates dropped 24 percent, from $48.61 million in the second quarter of 2011 to $36.95 million in the most recent quarter, marking the second straight loss of its 2012 fiscal year.
