Tufts spent $70M on EHR install

Boston-based Tufts Medicine reported EHR installation costs of around $70 million last year, according to The Boston Globe.

The health system uses Epic EHR, which it transitioned to Amazon Web Services last year. The IT costs are one of several factors placing financial strain on the health system. Staffing shortages, temporary workers and patient discharge backlogs added to the financial challenges.

Tufts reported $398.6 million operating loss last year and 85 days cash on hand. As part of cost-saving measures, the health system plans to eliminate 240 positions.
