Physicians can openly discuss EHR issues involving the usability of the technology, the American Medical Association said.
Vendors and developers can't restrict physicians and other healthcare organization staffers from publicly talking about EHRs' usability, security, user experience, interoperability, the developer's business practices, or the way a user has employed the technology, the AMA wrote in the March 8 article.
The only exceptions are issues involving nonuser-facing aspects of the technology, intellectual property, and premarket testing and development, according to a December ONC notice cited in the article. Screenshots and videos can be shared if they communicate a relevant health IT matter like EHR usability or interoperability.
