eClinicalWorks launched a tool to assess patients' risk for developing opioid misuse disorder.
The opioid risk tool, which is based on the CDC's guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain, comprises a clinical decision support system that estimates a patient's risk of developing opioid misuse disorder and provides suggestions for alternative prescriptions. It also alerts providers if they have exceeded the opioid dose recommended by the CDC.
Patients who are prescribed opioids will also receive educational notifications through the opioid risk tool. These notifications include drug information and instructions related to the safe storage and disposal of controlled substances.
The tool is part of eClinicalWorks' ongoing efforts to help providers prevent and detect opioid misuse, such as its work to integrate information from state-regulated electronic prescription drug monitoring programs into its EHR under a partnership with Appriss Health.
"The opioid epidemic is a problem of significant proportions that is only getting worse," Girish Navani, CEO and cofounder of eClinicalWorks, said in a news release. "The opioid risk tool will assist in combating the opioid epidemic, ensuring patients have access to safer treatment for chronic pain and reduce the misuse of these drugs."
