Nuance's DAX Copilot 1 year in: 8 notes

A year after its release, the DAX Copilot from Microsoft subsidiary Nuance has become one of the most popular generative AI-powered clinical documentation tools for health systems.

Here are eight things to know about the DAX Copilot, according to a Sept. 26 Microsoft blog post:

1. The smartphone app ambiently records clinicians' visits with their patients then generates a draft note for the EHR.

2. The platform is used by more than 400 U.S. healthcare organizations and over 600,000 clinicians worldwide.

3. The tool was the first ambient AI solution integrated into Epic.

4. At Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine, physicians who used DAX for at least half their patient encounters saw 11.3 additional patients a month. DAX users also reported spending 24% less time on notes and experienced a 17% reduction in "pajama time," or after-hours work.

5. At Bellevue, Wash.-based Overlake Medical Center & Clinics, 81% of clinicians in the pilot said the platform lowered their cognitive burden and 77% said it improved their documentation quality.

6. At Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health, the majority of DAX users reported being able to see more patients and spend more time with them.

7. Providers at Indianapolis-based Community Health Network reported seeing more patients and higher rates of job satisfaction.

8. The platform has "significantly reduced administrative workloads" at Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care, according to co-President and CEO Anthony Mazzarelli, MD.
