Elon Musk's neurotechnology company, Neuralink, has selected Phoenix-based Barrow Neurological Institute as the inaugural site for conducting its Neuralink PRIME Study.
The first human who received an implant from Neuralink underwent the procedure at Barrow Neurological Institute, according to an April 12 news release from Barrow. The implant is about the size of a quarter and is placed in a person's skull by a surgical robot.
The Neuralink PRIME Study is looking for adults with quadriplegia due to vertical spinal cord injury or ALS. These adults, according to the release, need to be at least 22 years old and have someone to help them take part in the study.
Neuralink was founded in 2017 and received FDA clearance for clinical trials in humans in May.
