Sandbox, Alphabet's quantum technology group used by New York City-based Mount Sinai, is spinning off into an independent company.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based Sandbox AQ, which launched in 2016, pursues software that would operate at least partially on quantum computers for telcom, financial services, healthcare, government and computer security sectors, according to March 22 press release.
The company has already gained a number of high-profile investors like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and customers including Mount Sinai Health System and telecom providers Vodafone Business and SoftBank Mobile.
Schmidt will serve as the chairman of the board of directors at Sandbox AQ. Jack Hidary will continue to serve as CEO.
