Northwell hospital partners with emergency communication app

Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.-based Phelps Hospital, a part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, has selected mobile communications tool Twiage to help the hospital's emergency department effectively communicate.

Twiage allows emergency medical services personnel to communicate with emergency room clinicians to better prepare for a patient. Prior to Twiage, EMS workers used a cellphone or radio to communicate.

Twiage can send alerts five to 10 minutes earlier than a radio or phone call, according to a Dec. 13 Phelps news release provided to Becker's.

"As an ER doctor for more than 25 years, timely and accurate information is critical to saving the life of an incoming patient," Barry Geller, MD, chair of the emergency department at Phelps Hospital, said. "Twiage allows EMS personnel to send photos, EKGs, or videos in real-time allowing our emergency medical unit to be better prepared ahead of when a patient arrives. We are in the business of saving lives and this is a powerful tool that I'm excited to have at our disposal."
