Founder, CEO of Alphabet health unit moves into new role

Andy Conrad, PhD, the founder and CEO of Alphabet precision health unit Verily, will become the executive chair of its board while current president Stephen Gillett will be promoted to CEO beginning in January, the company said.

In an email to employees reported Sept. 9 by The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Conrad said he planned to spend more time on scientific projects. "As you all know, we are working to position Verily to win and concentrating our efforts on fewer programs," he wrote. "Reallocating resources to fewer projects should increase productivity and the pace of advancement of these programs."

Meanwhile, Mr. Gillett joined Verily from Google in 2020 as an operational advisor and to launch a cybersecurity unit, being named COO that November, according to a Sept. 9 news release. He co-founded Chronicle, an Alphabet cybersecurity company that is now part of Google Cloud, and has also been an executive at Best Buy, Starbucks and Symantec.
