Shields Health Care Group, Baptist Health System, Resolute Health Hospital, Kaiser Permanente and Yuma Regional Medical Center were named in Wired's list of worst hacks and data breaches of 2022.
Wired created a list of the biggest digital security breaches of the first half of 2022, and five healthcare-based attacks were listed:
- Kaiser Permanente's Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington: On April 5, an unauthorized user gained access to the health plan's employee email accounts, which contained protected health information. The breach affected 69,589 patients.
- San Antonio, Texas-based Baptist Medical Center and New Braunfels, Texas-based Resolute Health Hospital: On April 20, the hospitals learned that malicious code had infected their networks as a result of an unauthorized party gaining access to certain systems between March 31 and April 24. The systems contained the protected health information of patients.
- Shield Health Care group: On March 28, Shield Health Care Group, which provides imaging and management services to healthcare facilities, learned that an unauthorized user had accessed its systems from March 7 to March 21. The breach impacted roughly 2 million patients.
- Yuma (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center: On April 25, the hospital learned a ransomware attack had affected its internal systems between April 21 and April 25. An investigation determined that an unauthorized user had removed files from the hospital's system that included patient health information such as names, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and limited medical information relating to care.
