North Carolina medical center data breach affects 1,541 patients

A data breach at Asheville, N.C.-based Charles George VA Medical Center has compromised the protected health information of 1,541 patients, Fox Carolina reported July 9.

On May 12, the center learned that an email correspondence, which included attachments of patients' protected health information, was sent through secure messaging to three patients, with two of the three having opened the emails.

The center worked to delete the information from the patient who had not yet opened the email, according to the publication.

Charles George VA Medical Center did not disclose what kinds of information may have been compromised.

The center is notifying all affected individuals.
