Nearly 883,000 patients ensnared in Illinois health system hack

The data of 882,782 patients of Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System was compromised in a 2023 hack.

In August of that year, the 15-hospital system found that an unauthorized third party had breached its network and accessed certain files, according to a notification to the Office of the Maine Attorney General.

The compromised data may have included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security and driver's license numbers, and treatment and health insurance information. The health system said it had no information that any of the data was misused.

"Hospital Sisters Health System has stood as a pillar of service to our communities for over 150 years. Throughout our response to the cybersecurity incident that took place in late August 2023, HSHS colleagues held steady in our commitment to provide quality care to our patients, and our hospitals remained open for our communities," a health system spokesperson told Becker's.

"We have now completed our notification process and provided all affected individuals with free identity theft protection and credit monitoring for those individuals who had Social Security numbers involved. We remain incredibly grateful for the patience and support of our communities throughout Illinois and Wisconsin."
