California hospital alerts 3,400 patients of unsecure server

Torrance (Calif.) Memorial Medical Center began notifying 3,448 patients that their information may have been exposed.

In January, Torrance Memorial was notified that a server with patient information controlled by an outside radiology vendor was unsecured. The vendor told the hospital that patients’ radiology images may have been accessible to unauthorized people.

After an investigation, Torrance Memorial determined that the server was unsecure between June 20 and Dec. 13, 2019. As of today, the server has been updated and is now secure.

Patient data on the scans that may have been exposed included names, dates of birth, gender, medical record numbers, accession numbers and referring physicians. No Social Security numbers or financial information was exposed.
