Salary Growth Slower for Physicians

Physicians' earnings have grown slower than the earnings of other care providers since 1987, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Average physician's earnings grew 9.6 percent from 1987 to 2010, from $143,963 to $157,751, researchers found. In comparison, pharmacist earnings grew by 44 percent and dentist earnings increased by 23 percent in the same time period.

The study surveyed 30,556 healthcare professionals, including 6,258 physicians, over 14 years.
