Oregon Health Plan to Boost Primary Care Compensation

FamilyCare, a Portland, Ore.-based, non-profit health insurer that offers Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans, announced (pdf) it will increase reimbursements to primary care providers by 50 percent this year.

Currently, FamilyCare pays primary care physicians $50 per office visit. Starting March 1, primary care physicians that treat FamilyCare patients will receive $75 per office visit, which is also roughly double Oregon's Medicaid rate.

FamilyCare covers more than 50,000 Oregon residents and also is one of Oregon's coordinated care organizations. Oregon created CCOs last year to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for Medicaid beneficiaries.

FamilyCare's increases to primary care pay mirrors the national shift toward better reimbursement of primary care providers. This year and in 2014, CMS will increase Medicaid payments for certain primary care physicians to Medicare rates.
