It's no secret many organizations have projected a major shortage of primary care physicians that will stretch into the 2020s, and recruiting those physicians has become a majority priority for hospitals and health systems.
Chad Stutelberg, executive vice president and practice leader at Integrated Healthcare Strategies, recently penned an article on five ways hospitals can better recruit and retain primary care physicians through compensation strategies.
1. Use hospitalists to take call instead of primary care physicians.
2. Encourage primary care physicians to work with advanced practice clinicians, but ensure that all compensation models account for the use of advanced practice clinicians.
3. Because many primary care physicians have 5 to 15 percent of their income based on clinical quality outcomes, make sure they have reliable access to electronic health records.
4. Formulate primary care committees and governance positions, and compensate physicians who take part in those activities.
5. Minimize primary care physicians' administrative burdens through the right management systems and support staff.
