General internists in the U.S. make approximately $201,840 per year, which averages to about $97.04 per hour, according to 2016 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

General internists in South Dakota saw the highest annual mean wage in the U.S. at $275,760, followed by internists in Alabama ($274,930) and Arkansas ($266,980). BLS calculated annual wages by multiplying the hourly mean wage by 2,080 hours.

The BLS was not able to gather data for several states, including Michigan, North Dakota and West Virginia.
