In 2012, CIOs of hospitals, health systems and other provider organizations earned an average base salary of $208,417, which was a slight increase from 2011, according to a survey from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (pdf).
CHIME surveyed 263 CIOs between December 2012 and January 2013, finding that compensation for health IT leaders was based on many factors, including hospital size, official title and geographic region.
Here are some key highlights on CIO compensation from the survey:
• Roughly 44 percent of CIOs said they received less than a 3 percent raise from 2011 to 2012. Eighteen percent reported no salary increase.
• A multi-hospital system CIO had an average base salary of $254,054, the highest of any facility grouping, while academic medical center CIOs were close behind at $243,229. Critical access hospital CIO earned $125,573 on average, the lowest of any hospital type.
• CIOs in the Pacific region, including California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii, earned the most in 2012 with an average salary of $232,181. The West South Central region of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana averaged $186,429 for CIOs, the lowest of any region.
• CIOs that also hold the title of senior vice president or executive vice president reported average base salaries of $310,326.
• The average salary of a CIO with a medical degree was $306,000 last year, and CIOs with only a high school diploma averaged $140,675.
