Christopher Olivia, MD, former president and CEO of Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health System, received $7.4 million in total compensation, benefits and severance in 2010 — his last year as the chief of the financially beleaguered health system, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
Dr. Olivia stepped down from his post last June after health insurer Highmark announced its plans to acquire WPAHS, which are pending regulatory approval.
Retirement and other deferred compensation comprised $5.4 million of the $7.4 million total, according to the report. Dr. Olivia's 2011 severance was also listed under the deferred payment category. The remaining compensation went toward his base salary, bonuses, incentives, and other compensation and nontaxable benefits.
Dr. Olivia has since been working as a consultant for Highmark, but that arrangement will end this summer.
