MetroHealth opens new psychiatric ED

Cleveland-based MetroHealth has opened a psychiatric emergency department to offer 24/7 care to patients experiencing mental health crises.

Staffed by psychiatrists, nurses, nursing assistants and social workers, the new facility is located at the health system's Cleveland Heights Medical Center and can accommodate up to13 patients, according to an Oct. 16 news release. Cleveland Heights is home to the system's behavioral health hospital, which opened in 2022.

In recent years, health systems nationwide have ramped up investments in behavioral healthcare services to improve access to appropriate levels of care and alleviate pressure on hospital emergency departments.
