New York hospital performs 1st 'domino' heart transplant on babies

New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital performed the first "domino" heart transplant on babies, according to an American Hospital Association report.

Domino transplants are when one person is both a donor and a receiver of an organ.

Mia Skaats, 8 months old, was born with cardiomyopathy and required a heart transplant. A second baby, Brooklyn Civil, who was not yet 3 months old, was born with one heart valve and needed a partial transplant.

Cardiovascular surgeons performed the domino transplant on Mia on May 10, 2023. Mia donated a working valve to Brooklyn and received a full heart transplant during a nine-hour surgery.
