New York hospital halts open-heart surgeries

Utica, N.Y.-based Wynn Hospital is temporarily suspending open-heart surgeries to review and strengthen the service, NBC affiliate WKTV reported May 7.

Leadership, medical staff and the board of directors are looking into the quality of the cardiac surgery program and have suspended the open-heart surgery program while an external organization conducts a review of its strengths, Patricia Charvat, senior vice president of marketing and strategy for Mohawk Valley Health System, which owns Wynn, told WKTV.

"We are working with collaborating facilities in the region to ensure that appropriate care is available for all patients requiring cardiac surgery services," Ms. Charvat said.

Only the open-heart surgery is affected. All other cardiac services are operating as normal.
