Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Washington Hospital Center recently performed the first robotic mitral valve surgery in the region.
"Robotic cardiac surgery is an exciting and important next step in the evolution of the MedStar Washington Hospital Center cardiac surgery program," Christian Shults, MD, interim co-chair of the cardiac surgery program at MedStar Health, said in a May 4 press release. "Our cardiac surgery program is already recognized as one of the largest and most experienced in the entire country. Robotic cardiac surgery is the latest example of our ongoing tradition of clinical innovation and excellence."
In addition to robotic mitral valve surgery at the facility, robotics will soon be used to treat other cardiac diseases. The robotic cardiac surgery program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the first in the region to serve Southern Maryland, greater Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia.
