North Carolina cancer hospital named after late Sen. Marc Basnight

North Carolina's state cancer hospital now bears the name of late state Sen. Marc Basnight, according to a Sept. 19 news release from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

Mr. Basnight was the state's longest-serving legislative leader and played a pivotal role in the hospital's opening. He died in 2020. The building was officially renamed the North Carolina Basnight Cancer Hospital in a ceremony on Sept. 19.

"The mission of UNC Health is to promote the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina. Today was a great opportunity to come together to honor Senator Basnight, a man who embodied that mission throughout his career in public service," said Wesley Burks, MD, CEO of UNC Health and dean of the UNC School of Medicine.

Janet Hadar, MSN, UNC Hospitals president, said patients are not alone when they walk through the doors.

"There are teams of health care professionals and support staff dedicated to providing world-class care in a safe and compassionate manner," Ms. Hadar said.
