IU Health breaks ground on $421M hospital: 5 things to know

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health has broken ground on a $421 million hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Five things to know:

1. The five-story facility will include 140 beds, 17 emergency department rooms, six operating rooms, three catheterization labs and four endoscopy rooms.

2. A medical office building connected to the hospital is expected to bring 60 providers to the area.

3. The hospital is projected to open in early 2027.

4. IU Health includes 16 hospitals, more than 300 primary care and specialty care offices and a growing network of urgent care centers. Earlier this month, the system announced its plan to sell its health plan to Elevance Health's Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for an undisclosed amount.

5. IU Health reported $53.1 million in operating income (1.2% margin) for the six months ending June 30, a 73% slide from the $195.7 million (4.6% margin) reported in the same period last year. However, operating income from core operations was comparable year over year.
