Boston Medical to lead redevelopment of struggling local hospital

Boston Medical Center wants to build a two-facility treatment and supportive housing complex on the struggling Lemuel Shattuck Hospital site, according to an NBC Boston report June 21.

The initial proposal calls for 326 beds and over 400 housing units amid seven acres of green space.

Lemuel Shattuck has been conducting an internal review of inpatient deaths amid allegations of neglect and poor care.

New Boston Medical Center Health System CEO Alastair Bell, MD, said the health system understands the need to reshape how mental healthcare should be delivered in such facilities.

"People suffering from these conditions require a new model of care — one that offers an integrated continuum of services, delivered by leading experts devoted to long-term solutions," he said in the report.
