The notion of "pull versus push" is an important concept when it comes to patient placement and flow, according to a TeleTracking blog post.
The pull methodology is a workflow process that ensures that patients are being smoothly transitioned in their care, and offers benefits over a "push" methodology. Pull methodology significantly improves the flow of patients through the hospital and focuses on the principles of customer value, everyday improvement and striving for perfection, according to the post.
The methodology was recently discussed in a Teletracking webinar. During the webinar, Maria Romano, RN, clinical product consultant at TeleTracking, outlined six takeaways regarding patient placement and implementing pull methodology. They are:
1. Implement a precision placement strategy; that is, assign your beds in real-time.
2. Institute an "open-door" unit policy for all admissions and transfers at any time of day.
3. Implement a "No Delay Nurse Report" to streamline the admission process.
4. Minimize bed changes by nurses. Monitor these frequently and report.
5. Set a 60 minute target from patient bed request to bed placement.
6. Hold accountability with two types of reports : Processing Time Analysis and Ready to Move.
Ms. Romano also said that after embracing the pull methodology Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., places 92 percent of all emergency department patients within the hour.
