UCSF Medical Center Opens $123M Stem Cell Center

The University of California, San Francisco has officially opened its $123 million stem cell center, according to a UCSF news release.

The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF was paid for with state and private funds. Since no federal funds were used to construct the facility or purchase the equipment, the stem cell research is "immune to variations in federal funding policy regarding human embryonic stem cell research," according to the release.

The idea for the center originated in 2004 by leaders of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
