OSU Medical Center Wins $100M Grant, May Build Proton Therapy Center

Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus has won a $100 million federal construction grant, enabling the hospital to add an advanced radiation therapy center, according to a Columbus Business Journal report.

With the addition of the grant, which was created in the federal healthcare reform law, OSUMC’s expansion budget has grown to $1.1 billion. The grant was intended for a public academic health center, meaning 27 institutions were eligible for the grant, according to the report.

The grant has enabled OSUMC to consider integrating proton therapy in the hospital’s new cancer center. Only preliminary designs are in place and a location for the facilities on the OSU campus is yet to be determined, according to the report.

OSUMC’s began its largest-ever capital project in June. A $649 million, 420-bed critical care and cancer hospital is expected to open in 2014.
