Certain blood clotting treatment algorithms can help decrease severe perioperative bleeding associated with cardiac surgery, according to a study from the September issue of Anesthesiology.
The algorithms also decrease blood transfusion requirements and were associated with improved outcomes and hospital cost-savings.
The study used point-of-care testing to examine blood clotting cascade and platelet function. The result showed blood clotting algorithms were also associated with improved outcomes, such as decreased incidence acute lung injury, renal failure, sepsis and thromboembolic complications when compared to conventional laboratory analysis.
Study participants had decreased six-month mortality and reduced hospital costs.
