James R. Downing, MD. President and CEO of St. Jude's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). Dr. Downing joined St. Jude's in 1986, serving as deputy director, executive vice president and scientific director before being named president and CEO in 2014. In addition to his role as president and CEO, he sits on a Blue Ribbon Panel to advise Vice President Joe Biden's National Cancer Moonshot Initiative through the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Downing played an instrumental role in launching the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, which led to groundbreaking discoveries in the field of cancer and made Time magazine's 2012 list of top 10 medical breakthroughs. In 2013, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine and named a finalist in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People list. He has received numerous awards, including the Association for Molecular Pathology Award for Excellence in Molecular Diagnostics.
