Penn Medicine (Philadelphia). Penn Presbyterian, Penn Medicine's flagship hospital, opened one of the first coronary care units in the country in 1963. Penn Medicine surgeons have performed more than 1,000 heart transplants since launching the health system's transplant program in 1988. Today, the Penn Cardiovascular Institute staffs more than 190 faculty members and researchers, including more than 70 principal investigators, who are all dedicated to discovering new heart therapies. U.S. News & World Report ranked Penn Presbyterian No. 8 on its 2017-18 list of the best hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association designated Penn Medicine a Blue Distinction Center+ for cardiac care.
