The transplant program, established in 1985, provides 15 patients new hearts annually. U.S. News & World Report ranked Abbot Northwestern Hospital among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Association honored the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac care. The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, established to advance clinical research and education for cardiac care, publishes more than 120 peer-reviewed studies each year.
