Houston Methodist Hospital. Opened in 2001, the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center has been on the forefront of heart and vascular care since inception. Physicians and researchers at the center were among the first to embark on stem cell research for treating cardiac and vascular diseases and one of the first to repair a leak surrounding a patient's mitral valve through a small groin puncture in 2008. More than 125 heart specialists and 1,000 employees staff the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. The center contains 10 operating rooms and 176 acute-care beds, and has more than 100 clinical trials currently in progress. U.S. News & World Report ranked Houston Methodist Hospital among the top 20 hospitals in the country for cardiology and heart surgery in 2017-18.
