Penn Medicine (Philadelphia). Established in 1871, Penn Medicine's neurology department is among the oldest in the country. Since its inception, it has grown into one of the highest-volume neurosurgical programs in the nation, accommodating for more than 5,000 operations each year. In 2015, Penn Medicine's surgeons reported performing the health system's 1,000th deep brain stimulation surgery to treat Parkinson's disease. The Neurology Department currently has 22 available clinical trials. In 2017-18, U.S. News & World Report ranked Penn Medicine No. 12 in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery.
