UC San Diego Medical Center. Established in 1966, UC San Diego Medical Center –Hillcrest is the primary clinical teaching site for UC San Diego School of Medicine. The 390-bed facility boasts the area's only regional burn center, one of two Level I trauma centers in the region, and the Owen Clinic, which is one of the country's top HIV care programs. UC San Diego Medical Center is part of UC San Diego Health, which also includes Thornton Hospital, Moores Cancer Center and the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center.
Surgeons at UC San Diego Health are the only team in San Diego performing living donor liver transplants, where they remove half of a healthy liver from a donor to transplant in a recipient. The United Network for Organ Sharing and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network designated UC San Diego Health as an approved living donor transplant program.
UC San Diego's list of accolades is lengthy. In 2015, the medical center was named one of the Truven 100 Top Hospitals. In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked UC San Diego Health the No. 1 healthcare system in San Diego, the No. 5 healthcare system in California and one of the country's top hospitals in 12 of the 16 adult and surgical specialties ranked by the publication. In 2016, Healthgrades honored UC San Diego with the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence and the 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care Award for the third year in a row.
