UC San Diego Medical Center. UC San Diego Medical Center, part of UC San Diego Health System, dates back to 1966, when the University of California overtook the lease of a county hospital to use as its primary clinical teaching facility. Surgeons performed San Diego's first kidney transplant operation there just two years later.
Now, nearly 50 years later, 390-bed UC San Diego Medical Center is one of the highest ranked hospitals in the state. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as first in the San Diego metro area and fifth in the state in its 2014-15 rankings. According to The Leapfrog Group, patients can feel safe receiving care at UC San Diego Health System, as the company gave the system an "A" rating in its Hospital Safety Score and named it to its list of Top Hospitals in 2014. Additionally, it is Magnet recognized for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is one of Truven Health Analytics' 100 Top Hospitals.
UC San Diego Medical Center has a history of being on the forefront in researching and treating specific diseases. For instance, in 1986, UC San Diego was designated as one of eight national centers for the research and treatment of AIDS. In 1998, the Women's Pelvic Medicine Center was established, making it the region's first center dedicated only to the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. More recently, UC San Diego Medical Center was named one of just 55 Ebola treatment centers in the nation.
