The percentage of U.S. women with a career break featured on their LinkedIn profiles is more than 43% higher than that of men, according to an Oct. 30 LinkedIn News post.
Here are five things to know:
1. Full-time parenting is the most common reason women pause their careers. These breaks last a median of more than three years, according to the post.
2. The median tenure for women before taking a break in their careers is 9.7 years. This is 3.6 years earlier than the median tenure for men.
3. When they do take time off, men are less likely to do so for parenting reasons. They are more likely to take a step back for a career transition or professional development.
4. Career breaks for men are typically less than one year, according to the post.
5. While rare, younger workers are more likely to pause their careers for a "microretirement" as a way to travel or pursue personal projects, according to The Wall Street Journal.
