Ascension's St. Vincent Health lays off 85 employees

Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health, part of St. Louis-based Ascension, laid off another 85 employees as it works toward efficiency amid a changing healthcare environment, reports the Indianapolis Business Journal.

The publication confirmed the news via a statement June 21 from the health system. In the statement, St. Vincent does not specify the positions or locations affected by the layoffs, according to IBJ.

However, the health system attributed the layoffs to changes in the healthcare industry and their effects:

"The healthcare environment continues to rapidly evolve, creating challenges and opportunities in how we best support those we serve," the statement reads. "We have the responsibility to transform our delivery system to ensure we have a sustainable model for the future. As a result, we've made changes to our staffing structure in various departments across the organization to operate more efficiently."

The layoffs are the most recent workforce reduction by St. Vincent, Indiana's second-largest health provider by employment. Earlier this year, the health system laid off 75 employees, including nurses, tech workers and support staff, reports IBJ.

In 2017 it laid off more than 100 employees, including patient-access representatives and insurance specialists.
