Health IT startups that monitor patients with chronic conditions and provide coaching for disease management are hiring health coaches away from hospital and clinic settings, STAT reports.

Companies like Omada Health and Livongo, which use analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to track patient biometrics, rely on health coaches to provide an extra level of intervention. These coaches are often dieticians or certified diabetes educators, for example, and many have opted in to the health tech setting after working in hospitals. They are attracted to the flexibility of the roles and the ability to work remotely, and often, to work with more patients, according to the report.

The trend indicates hospitals have more potential competitors when it comes to recruiting and retaining health coaches for population health efforts.
